Case Study: Optimizing Sediment Dredging Efficiency in East River
The Solution
UMPS advised the following: the SmartFeed™* system that provides chemical conditioning at real-time dredging rates and Geotube®** containers laid down in barges, a space saving option that eliminated the need for a dedicated lay-down area.
This combined approach offered several advantages:
The Results
UMPS’ sediment dredging solution delivered exceptional results. The effluent met the standards for direct canal discharge, and the process achieved a 67% capture rate for dry solids, significantly reducing the overall volume of material for disposal.
The Geotube® containers were adapted to operate completely on barges in the East River, adjacent to the site. Geotube® units were custom-sized to fit the barges and two layers of Geotube® units were stacked in each barge.
The patent-pending SmartFeed™ system provided automated polymer mixing, injection, and real-time performance data for the project.
Solids and flow were constantly changing, from 4% to 11% solids, and from 400 gpm to 1,500 gpm. The SmartFeed™ system tracked changes in solids and flow, adjusting polymer injection to optimum level every five seconds.
Effluent was clean enough for direct discharge without additional treatment. Silt volume was reduced from an estimated 52 barges (non- dewatered) to less than 1 barge of dewatered solids. The project was so successful that the same sediment dredging method was used for another facility upriver and approved for future applications.
In 45 days, 67% dry solids were achieved. Solids were removed from the barge and hauled to an EPA approved landfill in NJ.
