Case Studies
Brookhaven National Laboratory
Brookhaven is a multi-program national laboratory operated by Brookhaven Science Associates for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). BNL reviewed many technologies and found TenCate™ Geotube® engineered textiles with SmartFeed™ chemical conditioning had the capability to meet project goals. (0.2 MB)
In-Barge Dewatering
Geotube® containers were adapted to operate completely on barges, adjacent to the site. The patent-pending SmartFeed™ system provided automated polymer mixing, injection and real-time performance data for the project.
Kennecott Mine
Kennecott Mine in Magna, Utah requested an alternate method to excavation and open-air drying of tailing. The tailing had recoverable metal benefits if dry ore was 60% solids, using a conditioning agent that would not interfere with the copper cathode process. The consolidated ore within the Geotube® containers exceeded 60% dry solids with a capture rate of 99.3% in the returning filtrate. The Geotube® structures provided protection from rewetting and protection from airborne particulate migration.
Weymouth, MA Alum
Weymouth, Massachusetts is expanding its water treatment facility and discontinuing the use of alum sludge containment ponds. It needed to remove alum sludge and sediment from the reservoir where containment ponds decant was located. Water quality resulting from the SmartFeed & trade chemical conditioning process had a high capture rate resulting in 24 NTUs discharge with cake solids achieving 38% dry solids after several weeks of drainage.
Weymouth, MA Harbor
The SmartFeed™ system was used to inject polymers into dredged slurry containing contaminated sediments from the harbor; the conditioned slurry was then pumped into Geotube® containers. The SmartFeed™ system filtered and treated the hydraulically dredged sediments at a rate of 3,500 gpm. This separation technology cleaned the water and removed the need for further treatment.
